Advanced Content Management

Beyond the traditional methods of adding content to courses, Blackboard Learn also offers advanced tools for managing course content. You can find more information about these tools below. We recommend contacting the KU Educational Technologists at 864-2600 or itedtech@ku.edu for additional assistance if you are considering using these tools in your courses.

Content Collection: My Content

Instructors have 2 GB of storage space in the My Content area of the Content Collection. You can store files in folders and link to these files in different areas in your course. If you upload files to your course you can store them in the Content Collection and link to them again. Files can be shared across courses and with other users.

Upload a File to My Content

  1. Access My Content from the My Blackboard tab. Click the Upload button.Select Upload Files or Upload Zip Package

    • A Zip package provides an easy way to upload files that are already organized in folders.  Just make a compressed file from a folder that you have created in Windows or on a MAC.

  2. Browse for the file.
  3. Set your preferred options.
  4. Click Submit.

Remove a File from My Content

  1. Access My Content from the My Blackboard tab.
  2. Place a check in the box to the left of the item(s) that need to be removed.
  3. Click the Recycle button.

Share a File Stored in My Content

To share content set the Permissions for the item or the folder it is located in.

  1. Access My Content from the My Blackboard tab.
  2. Put your cursor on the name of the item or folder you want to share.
  3. Click the contextual menu (gray circle) and select Permissions.
  4. You will see your own name as Owner. Add permission by searching for a specific individual, everyone in a particular course or everyone in the system. Click one of these options:
    1. Select Specific Users - click Browse to search for an individual.
    2. Select Specific Users By Place - Select Course or Course Group and select from each course and group you have access to.
    3. Select Roles - does not apply to our system.
    4. Permit Anyone - allows any user in our Blackboard system to access this content.

Create a Folder in My Content

  1. Access My Content from the My Blackboard tab.
  2. Navigate to the area within My Content where you want to add the folder.
  3. Click the Create Folder button.
  4. Enter a name.
  5. Click the Create and Customize button if you want to edit folder options.
  6. Click Submit.

xpLor (Blackboard Open Content) provides a place for instructors to create and store course content that can be easily copied to courses or shared with their colleagues. It also provides educational resources that can be readily used in a Blackboard course.

xpLor houses shareable, reusable content in the cloud that is accessible to courses within several LMS platforms. You can:

  • Create or upload content.
  • Protect your content.
  • Share your content with other users and institutions as determined by specific parameters and sharing filters.
  • Search for content according to grade level, subject matter, standards, and other criteria.
  • Deliver your content seamlessly across multiple courses and systems simultaneously.

Access xpLor

To access xpLor:

  1. Enter a Blackboard course.
  2. Select a Content Area.
  3. Click the Build Content button.
  4. Select xpLor Content in the Mashups area.
